| Panamint Valley Threatened |
The BLM has authorized Canyon Resources' Briggs Mine to disturb about 700 acres of land and they have certainly done so. See Briggs Mine Photo Page. The new drilling proposal says they will only disturb 100 more acres within the new 3,000 acre claim block. These disturbances will be new roads and drill pads. I requested a copy of a map of the potential roads from the BLM last July and have transcribed what I got onto the USGS quad map using the DeLorme Topo USA program. The results are presented below. |

| View from Above - Potential New Roads on the Panamints Face. Full reclamation can never be achieved if gold not found, If mining proceeds, the entire face will be ripped away. Red lines are proposed new roads. Blue lines are proposed new routes up washes. Green lines are existing routes. | ||

| View from the West - Above is a simulated 3D view of the Panamint range taking the first map and projecting it roughly as seen from Slate Range Crossing to the west. Here is where the true extent of the potential impact can be seen. Rising almost twice as high as the current mine (tops at 4,000') and much more visible, the new roads would be right in our face. | ||

| USGS Quad View of Potential New Roads on the face of the Panamints as transcribed from the copy I received from the BLM. I believe it is fairly accurate as to location. I have used a thick line for the roads and of course a red color. What will be visible to the eye will certainly be the generally parallel road cuts, the discoloration of the bulldozed rocks, and the raw vertical dozed routes up the face of the two northern ridges. |
