Picacho Mine Open Pit, Imperial County This mine has stopped production and reclamation is in progress - but no open pit backfill is required - the pit will remain. This mine is several miles away from the proposed Glamis Imperial Mine. It has received awards for superior reclamation. |
Mesquite Mine, Imperial County Three large open pits are clearly visible here. Not only do they want to leave these pits but they are applying to expand further north. |
Rand Mine, Kern County This is one of multiple open pits in this area off US 395 north of Kramer Junction. |
Briggs Mine, Inyo County Three pits are being dug in various stages here in Panamint Valley. See Briggs Mine pages for more information. |
Coliseum Mine, San Bernardino County Here is an example of a "reclaimed" abandoned open pit with water left in the bottom. This is next to Clark Mountain north of I-15. |
Eagle Mountain, San Bernardino County The Eagle Mountain iron mine pit was left when the ore played out. The controversial project to bring LA trash here would initially not even use the abandoned pit. |
Molycor Mine, San Bernardino County Another non-gold open pit mine. They mine "rare earths" near Clark Mountain by Mountain Pass off I-15. In addition to the pit hazard, Molycor has released radioactive waste into nearby Ivanpah Dry Lake. |
American Girl, Imperial County This is one of the abandoned open pits from this gold mine in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. It also has won reclamation awards, but the pits remain. |
